Ontology knowledge graph

Force-directed network of the full ontology: 130 entities across 11 classes, 146 typed relationships, 36 cross-domain bridges. Filter by entity class, confidence tier, or relationship predicate. Click any node for its definition, aliases, and outgoing and incoming relationships. The "Bridges only" toggle collapses the view to just the cross-domain links — the cleanest way to see how FM connects to long COVID, ME/CFS, lipedema, MS, and the other adjacent fields the project draws on.

How to read the graph

Color encodes class. Each of the 11 entity classes — mechanism, anatomical site, molecule, cell type, symptom, subtype, trigger, intervention, biomarker, comorbidity, gene variant — gets a distinct color. Both the fill (pale) and the border (saturated) carry the class hue.

Size encodes connectivity. Nodes scale with degree (number of incident relationships). Load-bearing entities — mast_cell, IgG_fm, MRGPRX2, central_sensitization, fm_autoimmune — appear larger because they participate in many relationships.

Edge style encodes predicate. Causes, modulates, correlates with, predicts, responds to, present in, contradicts, and bridges each get a distinct color and line style. The bridges predicate is drawn with a thicker dashed orange line because cross-domain connections are the project's primary mechanism for finding non-obvious links.

Confidence tier on borders. Solid borders for established or emerging entities. Dashed borders for bridging entities — these are entities drawn from non-FM literature and held with explicit speculation.

Layout reflects clustering. The force-directed simulation pulls nodes toward their class centroid while connected nodes attract each other across classes. The result is visible per-class clusters with cross-class bridges crossing between them — a structural snapshot of where the project is doing cross-domain work.

The graph stays in sync with the underlying ontology/ontology.yaml. When the ontology updates, the visualization is regenerated by the build script. See the about page for the methodology behind the ontology and confidence-tier system.
